Allegory of Autumn by Mucha

AutumnMucha_edited_edited.jpg

This year, I decided to take part in the Foundations Revealed Costume Competition. The theme is 'The Natural World' so it made me think of Alphonse Mucha's wonderful flowery godesses. I chose one of my favourites, and got to work recreating it!

This was a very cool project that took me about a year from start to finish. The first task was to imagine what the back of the dress looks like, and draft a pattern. I chose a flowy white jersey fabric, and combined a pattern from an 1830s pair of sleeves and an edwardian-style skirt flared at the back. To find out more about how I made the dress, check out the post How I made the Mucha dress on my blog.

One of the reasons I chose this portrait was because one of my close friends Chloé resembles the lady in the painting, with curly red hair, a round face and beautiful curves. I was thrilled when she accepted to take part in the project, and it was easy to set up dates for fittings.

The photoshoot was a big challenge because we chose a spot that was more than an hour's drive away, we wanted to shoot at sunrise, and the flowers needed to be cut and prepared on the same day. I therefore had to get up at 3 am to put the flower headdress together.... but it was absolutely worth it!

Special thanks to my photographer Guillaume Rosa, and my lovely model Chloé.
