Ring Bearing Robot
My new brother in law is even more of a geek as I am, so for his wedding, the ring bearer was an adorable little robot that he made. When the happy couple asked me if I would like to help set it up with a ring holding system, what I heard was "Can you make a costume for this robot?" and of course, my answer was "YES !!!". After playing around with a few ideas, I suggested we set it up with a top hat and a bow tie, and the rings would be attached to a little embroidery on the back of the robot.

The first step was to make a few sketches of the layout, and get approval for the project. Then, I made some measurements of the robot to get the approximate dimensions of the hat and bow tie, in order to draft the pattern. The hat was made out of stiff canvas, with hat wire along the edge of the brim, and I shaped the top with my iron. It is cut on the bias, allowing to spread the top and get this funnel shape. I covered the shape in a soft fabric, then the black fashion fabric. All of these steps were hand sewn.
Then I interfaced a strip of the black fabric, and made the bow tie.
However, when we first tried it on the robot, we noticed that the bow does not stand out enough against the black robot parts, we decided to add a white collar on which it attaches. This also allows it to be better secured on the robot body.

The result is pretty cute and combined with the fact that it drives around in a very funky way, it is very fun to watch. In addition, it worked fantastically on the wedding day, and the bride and groom seemed very happy.
