Shipless Sailor

I put together this costume for a Murder party, where I was playing a pirate down on his luck. The description of the character specified that he/she had suspenders and smoked a pipe. I went for an androgynous look and staged the photoshoot near a lake in the mountains. As I don't have ready access to the sea, I thought that if I only included a part of the lake, it would look like a sheltered sea cove. Makes sense right? Not in the mountains in January. Yes, the 'sea' is frozen. Maybe that's why the poor sailor has no ship!

I made the breeches from a pattern and fabric from The Tudor Tailor, and I modified it slightly to make the closure more 18th century. I spent hours weathering them with the most aggressive sand paper I could find, but the fabric only appears threadbare at the knees and on the backend if you look at it closely. I suppose this is due to the very thick and high quality fabric, which is made with historically accurate techniques. To find out more, check out the Tudor Tailor website. The shoes are my first attempt at custom made 15th century style turnshoes, and though they are comfortable, they really don't look to good. The shirt and vest are improvised patterns and the hat was store-bought. The beautiful pipe is by Wooden Treasures.
